Fiji Mission Reflections

Two aspect of God's character stood out to me through this experience...

Year 11 Norwest student with children from a Fijian village

Our time in Fiji was truly remarkable. Whether we were building paths, playing with village children, sharing life experiences with the youth, or playing volleyball with women from Homes of Hope, we encountered countless moments where the power and presence of the Spirit of Jesus was undeniable. The experience was so enriching that I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone considering a similar opportunity.

As I reflect on our time there, I am struck by the many ways that God’s name was glorified. From the deep connections formed between our students and the Fijian children and youth at church to the uplifting worship songs sung around the campfire, God’s name was continually praised. Two aspects of his character stood out to me: His role as Provider and His role as Sustainer.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this trip was witnessing students discover their God-given gifts and talents, through opportunities provided by God. Initially, many of the students were reserved and hesitant to step out of their comfort zones. However, as they were presented with various opportunities, they began to uncover and embrace their unique abilities. This was seen when a student realised their leadership potential by organising impromptu games for over 50 children, and when another student discovered their joy for relating to children in the village.

This transformation within our students was more than just a boost in confidence—it was a testament to God’s provision.

He provided a space where the students could discover and develop their abilities, free from the pressures of their usual contexts. Watching them come out of their shells, embrace their gifts, and use them to serve the community was a powerful reminder that God is the one who gives us opportunities and gifts to fulfill our purpose.

Another significant lesson from our mission in Fiji was the understanding of God as our Sustainer. This truth became especially evident during moments of trial and exhaustion. We experienced God’s sustaining power in our ability to persevere, even when our energy was low. It wasn’t just about getting through; it was about a renewal that enabled us to continue our work with joy and dedication. These challenges did not weaken our determination; instead, they deepened our understanding that God is with us, sustaining us in ways that exceed our human understanding.

Through these experiences, I am reminded that our time in Fiji was about far more than the work we accomplished. It was about the profound spiritual truths we encountered. God, as both Provider and Sustainer, was present in every moment—guiding, supporting, and empowering us. These lessons will remain with me, constantly reminding me of God’s faithfulness and the extraordinary ways He works in our lives.
